What does it take to build up a green roof?
Layer 1: roof liner - protection
A solid foundation, a proper waterproof roof, needs protection before the green roof build up. You can find that protection in the roof liner (the white layer on the picture). It will protect your bituminous roofing from shrinking and expanding.
Layer 2: drainage layer - the 'studs'
The black 'boot studs' on the picture make up the drainage layer. They transport excess water away from the green roof.
Layer 3: filter liner - root barrier
The grey filter liner repels nutrients from the drainage layer that can cause blockage. This filter is also a barrier for unwelcome root growth in your drainage system.
Layer 4: substrate - anchored nutrition
Next is the substrate layer. Also known as the soil. It contains nutrients, water and oxygen and it 'anchors' roots for the vegetation.
Layer 5: vegetation - pick your colour
It's time for the finishing touch. The vegetation. Vegetation can include mosses, herbs, grasses, succulents... The choice is yours. Groendaktotaal has a selection of 10-12 species and colours of sedum. The sedum blanket will have at least 90% density upon delivery and installation.
